In an effort to stave off the effects of age, many individuals often turn to anti-aging treatments and products. However, without understanding different types of skin aging and the common causes, they may not know which product is most suitable for their needs. In this article, we'll discuss the different types of skin aging, their most common causes, proven anti-aging strategies, and a list of 10 best anti-aging products to consider.

There's More Than One Kind of Skin Aging

Intrinsic Aging

Intrinsic aging is the natural aging process over time due to hereditary factors. As we get older, our skin loses elasticity, and collagen production decreases, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. Intrinsic aging cannot be prevented, but there are methods to slow it down.

Extrinsic Aging

Extrinsic aging is premature aging caused by environmental factors such as sun exposure, pollution, smoking, and lack of sleep. Unlike intrinsic aging, which cannot be prevented, extrinsic aging can be managed through lifestyle changes and the use of protective skincare products that block out environmental aggressors.

Sun Exposure

The UVA and UVB rays from the sun can cause free radical damage to cells in the skin, leading to accelerated skin aging in age spots, wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Sun exposure is especially damaging to those with light skin because the UV rays can penetrate deeper into the skin than those with darker complexions.

Pollution

Pollutants found in the air can contribute to skin elasticity breaking down on a cellular level due to oxidative stress from these pollutants. As a result, extrinsic aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration, may form on the skin’s surface prematurely.

Smoking

Tobacco smoke emits chemicals that prematurely break down collagen in the skin, leading to accelerated signs of wrinkles and sagging skin. Smoking also decreases blood flow to the face, contributing to premature aging.

Lack of Sleep

Not getting enough sleep can cause blood vessels and capillaries in the face to swell and become enlarged due to an increase in cortisol production, which causes inflammation throughout the body, including on your face! This inflammation can lead to wrinkles and redness that won’t disappear until you get enough rest each night.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Wearing a wide-brimmed hat or SPF-rated clothing when spending an extended amount of time outdoors helps protect your skin from UV rays that could accelerate signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles or age spots over time. Additionally, try to minimize your time outside between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest throughout the day!

Wear Sunscreen

When you are spending time outside, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher with both UVA/UVB filters included in its ingredients list for maximum protection against sun damage that could accelerate signs of intrinsic or extrinsic aging alike!

Regularly Cleanse Skin

Cleansing one's face twice a day helps remove dirt and grime build up on the face as well as makeup residue that could contribute to acne breakouts or excess oil production leading to further damage over time if left unchecked! Using a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil is best for all skin types; just make sure you use lukewarm water instead of hot water, which can strip away natural oils from your face too quickly, resulting in dryness!

Exercise

Exercise helps increase circulation throughout your body, including facial muscles, so regularly engaging in activities such as yoga or pilates will help keep your facial features toned, thus minimizing sagging over time!

Eat Healthy Foods

Eating foods rich in antioxidants helps fight off free radical damage caused by environmental pollutants or UV radiation by quickly flushing them out of your system, thus reducing their effects on your face over time! Such foods include berries (strawberries/blueberries/raspberries/etc.), dark leafy greens (spinach/kale/etc.), fatty fish (salmon/ herring/mackerel/etc.), tomatoes, nuts (walnuts/almonds/etc.), etc.

Avoid Smoking & Alcohol

Both smoking & alcohol has been known to cause dehydration, thus accelerating signs of wrinkles & sagging over time, so it is best avoided when trying to maintain a youthful-looking complexion!
